A 14 month update...

I just can't help myself.  I miss the monthly updates, so I decided to throw in a 14 month update of our little man.

Well, first things first, the boy is walking!  He took his first unassisted steps on July 16th, 2011 (gotta put the year for my own records - ha!) at 13 months old.  That is just simply amazing considering all that the sweet boy has been through.  What a rock star!  Ever since then, he got better and more risky with his walking.  Now, at 14 months, he is walking everywhere and he loves it.  He walks circles around the house all day long.  And lately, the walk has turned into a run.  Brad asked me the other day if I have lost weight.  Uhh, yes, I don't sit down all day and I chase around a little boy that has more energy than I could ever imagine!

Field driving the choo choo train!

Since he started walking, we have had a bloody nose, a busted lip, and numerous bruises.

Going through mommy's bathroom cabinet.

A few new favorite foods:  lasagna (loves all pasta, really), pancakes, grapes, graham crackers, and key lime pie - Oh my!

Field is talking!  Some of his favorite words are ball (says the word all.day.long and points to anything round calling it a ball), Belle (our dog), Moooo!, wa-wa, momma, dada, deer, hey dude (guess who taught him that one?), night night, and hot.  He says "hot" every time we get in the car and every time I bring food to his tray at meal times.  Sometimes I blow on his food to make sure it's cool enough to eat after warming it and now he blows on his food before he eats.  It's pretty cute.

With one of his best friends, Sanders, at Kiddie Park.

Speaking of mealtimes, Field has officially mastered chunking his sippy cups across the kitchen and throwing food off his tray when he eats.  We are trying to teach him "No!"  But it's hard to discipline a cute little 14 month old!  We typically don't allow him to have his sippy cup after he throws it and we ignore the food throwing.  I have read that they are looking for a reaction so if we ignore, then they'll stop.  But what do I know, I am just a first time mom.  Please advise if you have tips on the food throwing/sippy cup chunking.

Bath Time - throws everything out of the tub and cries unless I give him the wet wash cloth in which he twirls it around (much like a lasso) soaking myself and the entire bathroom.  Are we seeing a trend with throwing things?  Maybe he will be a pitcher one day?

Driving the boats at Kiddie Park.

Field experienced his first visit to the church nursery.  He did great.  I was worried about leaving him there but when we went back to pick him up, the nursery "angel" said, "He did great.  He never cried and was happy the whole time.  But he NEVER stops moving!"  Ha, yes, we know, we have an active one on our hands.

1st time in the church nursery - August 21, 2011

A few days after the first church nursery visit, Field caught a virus.  {Sigh.}  It was pretty miserable for a few days, but he's doing much better now and back to his old self.  He never really stopped moving, even when he was sick, just was UBER grumpy and feisty.  And that definitely put us behind in the weight gain category.  We are back to eating good, solid meals!

From a heart standpoint, we have a check-up coming up in September.  Field's oxygen saturations have dropped a bit (low 80's).  We have a pulse oximeter at home.  We checked Field's sats everyday when he was a newborn but were told that we didn't need to check them anymore after Field had his second surgery.  Lately, Field's little purple feet make me nervous, so I have been checking the sats on a regular basis.  They are steadily reading 81, 82, 83%.  After the Glenn, they were always on the high side (high 80's) so it has been a surprise to see this drop in numbers.  I've reported it to our cardiologist and we'll see if there are any changes in the heart at our next appointment.  We would love your prayers for a stable, positive, and encouraging heart check-up.

Thanks for checking in!

Ways to make your baby chubby...

First off, thank you SO much for all of the encouragement from my last post.  You guys are awesome!  I loved the sweet comments on the blog and I also got many sweet texts and messages from my awesome girlfriends.  Thank you all!

Several of you asked for my tips on how to make the baby chubby, so I thought I would go ahead and share here.

We got a powder called Duocal from the pediatrician that can be added to milk, yogurt, applesauce, etc.  I add it to the 2 bottles that Field gets a day and also I add it to his yogurt.  Typically, Field eats one container of yogurt a day, but I break it up into 2 different snacks since he doesn't LOVE yogurt.

Here is Field's eating schedule for the day:

7:30am - Breakfast - usually waffles or pancakes with butter and some fruit
9:30-10ish - Bottle with milk (1 Tsp of duocal added) and some graham crackers or Ritz crackers and cheese
11ish - Lunch - usually turkey or ham, cheese, bread with butter, avacado, and fruit and veggies (I usually drizzle olive oil over the cheese, bread, veggies, and ham/turkey)
12- Nap
3 - Bottle with milk (1 Tsp of duocal added) and a half container of yogurt with 1 Tsp of Duocal and some crackers
5:30 - Dinner - whatever we are having with olive oil drizzled over the entire meal and butter added to whatever I can.  Huegghhh!  {That was another gag.}
6:45 - "Late Night" Snack - rest of the container of yogurt from earlier with 1 Tsp of Duocal added.

You can buy Duocal at any drug store.  It might have to be specially ordered by the pharmacist.

I truly believe that adding in that late night snack has really helped with weight gain.  It's become our nighttime routine.  He gets to watch cartoons in mommy or daddy's lap while he eats his "special {please make Field chubby} treat."

Now, if I ate all of that every day you would have to roll me out the front door to get anywhere.  So let's hope this puts some lbs. on the little man.

Operation Gain Weight

So I have officially been the WORST blogger lately.  We have had a GREAT summer and things have been going so well for us.  We are settled in our new house and life has been great.  The blog has suffered, though, as I keep thinking most people aren't interested in our day to day antics. :)

Anyway, I'm blogging now to update on a frustrating check-up with the pediatrician last week. I called and asked for an appointment for 2 reasons... #1, my child will not drink milk and #2, I didn't feel like he was gaining weight. Sure enough, he hasn't been gaining. In fact, he was the same exact weight that he was at his one year appointment 2 months ago.  Since Field will not drink milk and we've weaned off of formula, he is missing out on all of those extra calories. That, on top of a heart that works overtime and a very active, little boy makes for a skinny little guy that struggles with weight gain. Wouldn't that be nice?! In most cases - yes, but for us it's just plain frustrating. I left that appointment feeling very discouraged and had a bit of a pity party for myself and my sweet child. We hear it enough when random strangers at the grocery store tell us that their nephew is 6 months old and so much bigger than Field. Or we'll hear, "he's so cute, how old is he, about 6 months?" I'll be honest, it gets pretty old.

So here's the game plan...Operation Gain Weight started immediately. We are to add good fats to all meals - butter, olive oil, canola oil, and/or coconut oil.  We are going back to the bottle and will try to get in at least 16oz of regular cow's milk a day with an added powder called Duocal that adds calories (on top of his 3 meals a day and possibly a snack or two).  The bottle is a challenge. Have I mentioned my child is active?  He does not sit still.  Ever.  I heard someone describe their child as being in a "perpetual state of motion."  That describes Field PERFECTLY.  So trying to go back to the bottle is really tough considering he will flip, roll, turn, scoot, etc to get down from my lap and on to his playing again.

What's for dinner, mama?

You want me to eat what?!

Yumm!
(He really is a great eater!)

So if you have a prayer to spare, we would really appreciate your prayers for Field's growth and weight gain.

I'll keep you all posted on how Operation Weight Gain is going.

*UPDATE*
I wrote that post last week and never published it.  I tend to do that often.  {Sigh.}  Anyway, this week we checked in with the doc and Field gained 1lb. in 1 week!  Woah!  And you guys didn't even know to pray yet.  I guess that olive oil (120 calories in 1Tbsp - yikes!) really works along with 2 bottles of whole milk a day, Duocal 3 times a day, 3 meals a day, 2 snacks, and lots and lots of butter.  {Huaeghhhhhh!)  That was a gag.  It's working so I'll keep doing it.  :)

Photo"Field"Shoot

I recently had my own photo-shoot with this sweet, sweet baby.

Trying to figure out f-stops, aperture, and shutter speed - HUH?!

I figure no better time to learn than NOW, so here we go!

Shooting in Manual mode is confusing.
So far I have read the same tips over and over and it still doesn't make sense to my noggin.
Any good photography books or blogs recommended for this novice?

2nd Annual *Team Field* American Heart Association

The American Heart Association will be having its annual Heart Walk in San Antonio on Saturday, October 22, 2011.

We are forming our second annual Team Field to honor and support our precious miracle.  We would be honored for all San Antonians to join us!

The event is FREE and if you would like to make a donation to the American Heart Association in honor of Team Field you can do so when you sign up on the website. All money raised goes to the American Heart Association to help support research, education and advocacy for heart issues including congenital heart defects.

You can simply join our team to show your support (even if you can't make the actual event), you can join the team and come walk with us on October 22 (we'd love to see you!), or you may do all of the above and also get others to support you in your walk by making donations to your personal webpage.

Last year, in a matter of just 6 short weeks, our team recruited 80 members and raised $2,704!  This year, we have a goal of raising $3,000 and I have no doubt that we will reach that goal.
The walk details are below:

Saturday, October 22
8:00 AM Opening Ceremonies
9:00 AM Heart Walk Begins!
(*The route is 3.1 miles with water stations along the way.  Strollers and wagons are welcome!)
Brackenridge Park Joske Pavilion

The following link can be used to join the team:

When you get to the team page for Team Field, you will click on "Join Our Team."

I will send more details to those who join the team as the walk gets closer and we will meet and walk together with our precious Feisty Fightin' Field Johnson!

Thank you for supporting such a wonderful cause that is so dear to our HEARTS!  It means the world to our family to have your love and support.

Absolutely Amazing

Tonight a link was posted by a few heart mama friends (Thank you Andrea and Jenny!) on their Facebook pages and lo and behold it was a video about Dr. Charles Fraser (Field's heart surgeon) and the Heart Center at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas where we receive treatment for Field and his CHD.

Here is a glimpse into the life of CHD'S.

Here is a glimpse of...
- The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit where Field spent 7 days post-op back in January
- The hallways where we stood and waited, paced, and cried
- The conference room where we discussed Field's surgery with shaking hands and trembling voices
- The nurses, doctors, and medical professionals that helped take care of Field - and us! (Seriously, I bet more than half of their time was spent explaining things to Brad and I.  We asked questions about everything.  Bless them for being so patient with us!)

Here is also a glimpse of...
- How very serious, difficult, and devastating CHD's are....but at the same time, the amount of HOPE for ALL babies born with CHD's.

And sadly, here is a glimpse of the place where we will do it all over again when Field turns 3.

DISCLAIMER - Parts of the video are quite graphic and of course, quite emotional.  Watch at your own discretion.  :)

Click here to watch the video.

My favorite part of the video:  Dr. Fraser saying how important tenacity is for all congenital heart surgeons.  If the surgery takes 10 hours, well then it takes 10 hours (ours took about 8 hours!) and if the surgery wasn't quite right the first time then have the courage to go and do it again (which happened to us!).

I cannot express how grateful I am for TCH and to the Lord for placing us in the very best hands - Dr. Charles Fraser.  I loved seeing his sweet nurse practitioners, fellows, and co-workers in the video.  Every single person in that video was a familiar face and they are truly miracle workers.

Thanks for the great video TCH...We'll see you in 2 years!

And to end this post titled, "Absolutely Amazing" - Field took his first unassisted steps today!

Absolutely Amazing.

For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD; I sing for joy at the works of your hands.  Psalm 92:4Photobucket

Cousin Time

Over Memorial Day weekend, we traveled to Atlanta for cousin Dana's wedding.  We flew out on Friday morning and came back Sunday afternoon.  A very quick trip that was jam packed with lots of fun family time.  The hubs has family on both his mom and dad's side in Atlanta so we got in visits with lots of wonderful family members.  Most family members had never met Field so it was great to introduce him to the fam.

It started out with the rehearsal dinner in Atlanta.  Lots of fun with cousins!  On Saturday morning, we went out to Marietta to visit with my FIL's family.  Sadly, I forgot my camera so I only have a few iPhone pics.

Saturday afternoon was the wedding and Field had his first debut as a ringbearer.  He was fantastic!

Brad and Field with the beautiful bride!

The reception was an absolute blast.  Field LOVED the music and dancing with mommy, daddy, Nonnie, and Granddaddy.

The flights were great.  We had direct flights and the flight was about 2.5 hours.  Not bad at all!  On the way there, Field stayed awake the entire time.  Yes, it was naptime.  Yes, he was tired.  But the air vents, light buttons, windows, etc. provided too much entertainment for him to sit and go to sleep.  As soon as we deboarded the plane and loaded him up in the stroller, he passed out.  Good thing that rental car line was long because he was able to get in a 45 minute nap, which ended up being his only nap of the day.

And while we are on the subject of cousins, we also attended a family reunion a few weekends later with my MIL's family.  More fun time with cousins!

Lots of boys and only two girls!

These sweet girls LOVED taking care of Field.

Can you tell these kiddos come from a long lineage of Longhorns?!?

Family time is such a blessing!
